What is Kainuu Trail? Experience Finland’s Finest Pine Needle Trails in Hossa National Park
Published: 19.03.2026

Are you considering your first trail running event, or are you looking for the most atmospheric race of the summer? Kainuu Trail is a trail running event that combines Finland’s pure nature, historical landscapes, a genuine sense of community, and a relaxed "Kainuu-style" atmosphere. In this summary, we’ll tell you why Hossa is a place every runner must experience at least once in their lifetime.
Kainuu Trail takes place in the stunning Hossa National Park, which was chosen as Finland’s centenary national park in 2017. Hossa is famous for its crystal-clear waters, esker ridges formed by the Ice Age, and prehistoric rock paintings.

Our goal is to offer participants a route that is not just a sporting achievement, but a holistic nature experience. Runners will traverse the same paths used by the area's first inhabitants as far back as the Stone Age—Hossa’s settlement history dates back nearly 10,000 years.
Why Kainuu Trail and Hossa?

While many trail running events offer challenges in deep mud, rocks, steep vertical climbs, or even off-trail sections, the soul and core of Kainuu Trail lie elsewhere: "diamond-class" pine needle trails, the breathtaking beauty of the national park’s crystal-clear waters, and the deep silence of the wilderness.
Magical Ridge Trails
Our routes frequently follow narrow esker ridges, with turquoise waters shimmering on both sides. These needle-covered paths are soft underfoot and invite you to enjoy the flow of running.
Crystal-Clear Waters and Pure Air

You’ll run along the shores of lakes, ponds, and rivers where the water is so clear it’s nearly transparent. And yes—you are welcome to take a dip, and generally, the natural waters here are fully drinkable (at your own risk). The air is scientifically proven to be among the cleanest in the world. This is evidenced by the abundant beard lichen (naava) growing in the spruce forests of Julma-Ölkky and Värikallio. Lichen is a well-known indicator of exceptional air quality.

Rugged Canyon Lakes
You will see the iconic Julma-Ölkky canyon lake and pass near Värikallio, home to some of Finland’s largest Stone Age rock paintings (approximately 2,500–5,000 years old).
A Distance for Everyone
We offer a suitable challenge for everyone, from the easy 10 km Huosius route to the 78 km Julma-Ölkky Ultra.

Route Options – Choose Your Challenge
Kainuu Trail offers a suitable path for every fitness level. All distances feature a general category for participants aged 18 and older. With the permission of a parent or guardian—and when running accompanied by them—even the longest distances are open to participants under 18. Additionally, the 10 km distance has specific categories for boys and girls aged 12–17.
- 10 km Huosius & 21 km Jatkonvaara: Perfect distances for first-timers and those who want to enjoy a brisk pace without extreme strain.
- 38 km Kokalmus & 55 km Värikallio: More demanding routes where your endurance will be tested amidst stunning scenery.
- 78 km Julma-Ölkky: A true ultra trail and wilderness adventure that circles almost all the finest places in the national park.

Warm Atmosphere and Professional Organization
Even though we run in the wilderness, the aid stations and organization are top-notch. Our routes are carefully marked, and at the aid stations, you’ll be greeted by local, warm-hearted volunteers.

At the finish line, you can enjoy the delicious offerings of our Finisher Lounge and toast your achievement with a glass of bubbly with a friend. The event center has a relaxed and encouraging atmosphere where every finisher is a hero.
