This event gives runners the chance to enjoy Finland’s most beautiful trails, crystal-clear waters, and the serene peace of ancient forests – Feel the Wild!
Here’s a closer look at what Kainuu Trail is all about.
Distances & Routes
Kainuu Trail offers five unique routes suitable for both beginners and experienced trail runners:
Julma-Ölkky 78 km – A demanding ultra through Hossa’s top sights
This 78 km route is a spectacular and tough ultra-distance challenge, showcasing all of Hossa National Park’s finest trails and most iconic landscapes – a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Värikallio 55 km – A challenging course with a dramatic canyon lake crossing
The 55 km Värikallio route offers a royal selection of Hossa’s highlights: the legendary Julma-Ölkky canyon, ancient Värikallio rock paintings, Muikkupuro’s clear waters, the pristine Kokalmus and the scenic ridges of Jatkonvaara and Huosiusjärvi.

Kokalmus 38 km – A moderately difficult route through ancient ridgelines and forest paths
Enjoy the best pine needle trails and sandy ridges of Hossa, along the same ancient routes used by the area's first inhabitants over 10,000 years ago.

Jatkonvaara 21 km – A scenic half-marathon across the legendary Jatkonvaara
Run along Hossa’s most enjoyable trails and classic ridges, including a demanding climb to Jatkonvaara and its stunning views – this 21 km route is a true gem.

Huosius 10 km – A short and easy trail for beginners or speed seekers
This 10 km route offers a smooth introduction to trail running, with the most comfortable paths, gentle ridges, and crystal-clear lake and pond views at Huosiusjärvi and Huosilampi.

Finisher Lounge by CRISP – Relax and Recharge at the Finish Line!
After your run, reward yourself in our Finisher Lounge, located right by the finish line. Sink into a sun lounger and enjoy an ice-cold CRISP beer or this year’s refreshing new Crisp Radler. Or raise a glass of bubbly or a refreshing soft drink – you’ve earned it!

Registration & Participant Limit
Registration for Kainuu Trail 2025 is now open! The event is limited to 600 participants to help preserve the unique nature of Hossa for generations to come. The current price tier closes on April 30th, 2025 – secure your spot now!
Event Schedule & Transport
The event centre and race office are located at the Hossa Visitor Centre, open throughout the race weekend. On Friday, enjoy a buffet dinner and route briefings. On Saturday, free race bus transportation is available from Kajaani to Hossa – comfortable and eco-friendly. You can also take a race bus from Ruka or Kuusamo for just €20 round-trip.
