Travel Tips for Kainuu Trail - Take Advantage of Our Race Bus on June 29th

We have aimed to make the arrival for the 2024 Kainuu Trail Running event as smooth as possible, both from within Finland and from abroad. For instance, our own race-day buses on June 29 will serve all runners on the 10 km, 21 km, and 38 km routes arriving from either the Kajaani or Ruka-Kuusamo direction to Hossa. Read on in this article for the best arrival tips for Kainuu Trail at Hossa National Park.

You can easily arrive in Finland and Helsinki through Finnair's direct flight connections from almost every part of the world. Conveniently, you can also reach Finland via the Baltic Sea ferry connections to either Helsinki or Turku. From the airports or ports, you can rent a car if desired.

The quickest way to travel to Kajaani is through a direct flight from Helsinki to Kajaani: Check out the summer flight schedules for 2024 on Finnair's website. From southern Finland, you can also conveniently arrive in Kajaani by train, bus, or car.

You can also travel to Kajaani quite easily via Oulu by first taking a direct flight from Helsinki to Oulu, and then continuing your journey from Oulu conveniently by train or bus.

Once in Kajaani, you can utilize public transportation to get around, both from Kajaani Airport and the travel center.

On the day of the Kainuu Trail race, June 29, the most convenient way to travel is by our race buses to our competition center, located at the Hossa National Park Visitor Centre (Jatkonsalmentie 6, Suomussalmi).

Our race buses follow two different routes:

1) Kajaani-Suomussalmi-Hossa-Suomussalmi-Kajaani

  • Departure time: Sat, June 29, at 05:45
  • Departure station: Kajaani Travel Centre
  • Arrival time in Hossa: 08:30
    • 38 km race start at 9 am, allowing ample time to pick up race materials
    • 21 km race start at 10 am
    • 10 km race start at 10:30 am
  • Departure time from Hossa for return trip: 17:30
  • Arrival time in Kajaani: 20:15
  • Ticket price: €25 (round trip)

2) Ruka-Kuusamo-Hossa-Kuusamo-Ruka

  • Departure time: Sat, June 29, at 06:40
  • Departure point: Ruka, Sale Rukanriutta (Rukanriutta 7)
  • Arrival time in Hossa: 08:20
    • 38 km race start at 9 am, allowing ample time to pick up race materials
    • 21 km race start at 10 am
    • 10 km race start at 10:30 am
  • Departure time from Hossa for return trip: 17:30
  • Arrival time in Ruka: 19:10
  • Ticket price: €20 (round trip)

You can easily reach Hossa on weekdays (Mon-Fri) and Sundays via public bus connections (Hossa Bus). The Hossa Bus route includes Kajaani-Suomussalmi-Hossa-Kuusamo-Hossa-Suomussalmi-Kajaani. For more details, visit the Hossa National Park website and purchase tickets from Matkahuolto's website.
