It is about one year when Covid-19 pandemic started.
This past year has been very exceptional and challenging for the most of us and still it seems that we have to keep fighting with this hard and complicated situation at least this year before the vaccination effects enough (hopefully). Even though - we in Kainuu Trail and Kainuu Orienteering Week hope that upcoming summer 2021 is a little bit better one for all of us.
We have discussed with Kainuu region's health care specialists about the situation of Kainuu Trail's arrangement and the Covid-19 effects on that. Right now (16th of March 2021) the situation is that we are still planning to organize the event but most likely with different kind of restrictions due the coronavirus. It might be that we have to limit our maximum amount of the participants in under 500 participants so that the event is possible to arrange safely enough. It also might mean that we have to limit the starting groups on every distance (78, 55, 38, 21 and 10 k) under 50 person / start group. There will be also several different kind of actions in Kainuu Trail arrangements by which we try to minimize the risks of coronavirus infections and problems with that. We will inform about these actions, restrictions and limitations in Kainuu Trail webpage, social media and in this newsletter in April before our next entry step on 30th of April. Some of the coronavirus actions you can already read from our webpages where we inform runners about the Kainuu Trail aid stations and Kainuu Trail equipment/gear.
Anyway - we as an organizer - look positively towards upcoming summer. We truly hope and believe that we are able to arrange Kainuu Trail event for all of you who have long waited to come and enjoy Hossa National Park's perfect trail running trails, great and amazing sceneries and peaceful silence of the wilderness.
In this newsletter 1/2021 we share for you some of the most important news about the event:
- New webpages were released in Feb 2021
- Covid-19 actions
- Kainuu Trail shirts in webshop for sale
and more...
Have a nice spring time and enjoy running!

We are taking care of our Kainuu Trail runners and spectators in this coronavirus (Covid-19) situation
As an organizer of the event we will take coronavirus situation seriously in Kainuu Trail event. Our main target is to organize the event as healthy and safely as possible.
We will release separate instructions for participants and spectators due the coronavirus situation and actions needed for that in our webpages.
Here are shortly the main actions due the Covid-19:
- We will obey the instructions of the Finnish government and the health care officials of the Kainuu region
- Hygiene (hand wash stations in the event centre and in the aid/service stations of the tracks)
- Safe distances (remember to use 2 m distance towards each other)
- Hygiene masks
- organizers will use the mask in the event centre and in the aid/service stations
- we ask that participants should use masks in the event centre, in aid stations and in start and finish area
- Mask is not needed to use during the running, but for example if you stop for aid station a little longer time the mask is needed to use
- Showers and saunas are organized as the coronavirus situation demands
- Mass starts of the each distances are organized so that participants have enough space
- Most likely in each start group the maximum amount of the starters is under 50 runners (this is to be updated in April 2021)
- We are ready to make participant restrictions to each content and the whole event if needed
- Most likely the limitation of maximum amount of the participants will be under 500 (this is to be updated in April 2021)

Hossa National Park - Finland's youngest National Park
People have been fascinated with the amazing esker nature and clear fish lakes of Hossa National Park since the Stone Age. The northern location of the region is evident in the Kainuu nature and the landscape has a feeling of Lapland.
There are about 90 km of trails in the Hossa National Park. The trails, most of which are easy to travel on, run through the most handsome esker and lake scenery in Hossa. You can set off for a long hike by linking circle trails by means of the connecting trails. There are trails, destinations and accommodation that are accessible to all in the national park and close to the visitor centre.
In many places, the hiking and biking trails run along the same trails. Hossa also provides trails that are accessible to all. Please be considerate to the others on the trail.

Arriving to Finland, Kainuu, Suomussalmi and Hossa is quite easy and flexible.
We recommend the following:
1. Book flights from the departure country to Helsinki (Helsinki airport). Helsinki is the capital city of Finland.
2. Book flights from Helsinki airport to Kajaani airport or Kuusamo airport or Rovaniemi airport or Oulu airport
Kajaani and Kuusamo airports are the closest ones.
or
2. Rent car from the Helsinki-Vantaa and drive from Helsinki to Kajaani and Suomussalmi. It about 660 km and 7-8 hours driving from Helsinki to Suomussalmi.
3. From Kajaani airport to Suomussalmi and Hossa
- 1 h 20 min driving to the Suomussalmi city centre
- 1 h 10 min driving to Event Centre (Jatkonsalmentie 6, Suomussalmi)
Nearest airport´s and driving times to Hossa and Kainuu Trail Event Centre are:
Kuusamo airport - only 1 h 00 min driving to the Event centre
Kajaani airport - about 2 h 30 min driving to Event centre
Oulu airport - about 3 h 00 min driving to Event centre
Rovaniemi airport - about 3 h 10 min driving to Event centre
From these airports / cities you can take a rental car or take a bus (to the Suomussalmi). We recommend the rental car because in Finland driving is quite easy (no big traffic and the roads are good).
